Begin Programming: Build Your First Mobile Game MOOC offered by University of Reading went live yesterday. We had lots of comments from our participants. Many of them felt it would be useful to download our videos, especially with slow internet connections it can be very frustrating to watch videos online.
We requested FutureLearn and they have given us the functionality already. So in this blog I am going to explain how you can download videos from our MOOC.
In order to do this you must be logged into your account with FutureLearn.
Step1:
Go to the video you want to download. In this example I am using the first video in activity 1.1 - Welcome to Week 1.
Step 2:
Select 'Download this video' link to download it. If you want to save it, right click and select 'save as'.
Now your connection speed will determine how quickly you can download the video :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for this - that's great. It was impossible for me to watch the videos live in the evenings.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, what does the < signify above - there is no explanation when I hover the mouse over it
You are most welcome!
DeleteI think the < symbol signifies 'Share' (usually this is sharing to social media platforms, but in this context refers to downloading)
DeleteI never got informed of the live videos have you a link to where I can watch them / download them ?
ReplyDeleteI had this problem as well - I've received every other email from FutureLearn, but not the Week 1 kick-off... only learned about it from an email today. Checked my spam/bin etc and it definitely not been received.
DeleteAnyway, to answer your question - you can access the video once you login to your FutureLearn account and follow the big button that takes you to the course.
We do not have access to participant emails and FutureLearn send all notifications. Perhaps you could report to them using Feedback button on FutureLearn left hand side
DeleteI have the same problem ... no Week 1 email - just an update with extra resources. Can you be more specific about the feedback button Tharindu .. can't seem to find that either :(
DeleteHi Mair, there is a blog post on providing feedbak to FutureLearn please see below. http://openeducationmooc.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/flmobigame-how-to-leave-feedback-for.html
DeleteThe github link below to the game framework as given in the Software Installation Guide v3 is returning a "Not found" error. Please let us know the correct location.

Ok, I found that if you just go here, then there is a download zip button at the bottom right.

I tried that link John but just get a 400 invalid request message ... using Chrome and cutting and pasting link ...
DeleteI copied the MOOC files over but after copying the manifest mooc/src/uk.ac.reading.sis05kol.mooc library is still showing the Red X. Three of the programs in that library are showing the Red X or Yellow ! I did the copies 3 times with the same result.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else had this problem?
How can I fix this?
Tharindu can you help? I have compared files, I've looked at all the source code and package name is correct. I ran 'CLEAN' which produced 17 errors. All of the errors relate to Names starting with "R." I am now struggling to make progress.
DeleteHi Felix, could you please post your question in 'Let's help each other' (Activity 1.9) of the course.
DeleteHi Tharindu
ReplyDeleteI would like to review the course material on my Android tablet, but the videos do not run. Unfortunately there is also no download link shown (I'm guessing the hosting platform for the videos restricted access on mobile devices) so access to the videos is impossible. It's there a direct link to the host where I can find the videos to download without going through the player?
Best
Martin
Sorry, we do not have direct access either. Can you see the Feedback button on the left side of the screen when you login to FutureLearn? If you contact them via that they will get back to you. Hope this helps
DeleteI really appreciate your instructions on how to download the videos. I'm taking the course, but found it a little too complicated and fast paced for a beginner. I'm downloading all of the material so I can take the class at my own pace, after taking a course or two on beginning programming.
ReplyDeleteHi, We will be running the course again later in 2014. You can join us if you like. Details will be posted here:
